Taken! How much should your small business spend on content marketing?
(CNN Money) — What should a small business pay for content marketing?
Finding the right amount of the investment is tough, according to a recent report from content marketing platform OutboundPath.
Fittingly, the phrase “finding the right amount of investment” is the theme of the report, which combed through real-life experiences from 60 business owners — ranging from “10K plus,” “$10k to $100k,” to “Less than $10k” — with experienced content marketing strategists.
The survey of 500 business owners was fielded over the course of eight weeks last fall.
Based on the data, here’s what the average business owner spends on content marketing, depending on its size:
-50k to 75k – $100k to $250k
-15k to 20k – $250k to $500k
-5k to 10k – $0 to $100k
Survey participants also gave us some other compelling data points, which are worth noting, too.
The majority of businesses said they spent between $10,000 and $15,000 per month.
Of the business owners who did not respond, it appears about half were earning less than $50,000 a year.
They spent almost 10% of their total yearly marketing budget on content marketing.
While the data shows some businesses spend very little on content marketing, there are still a few tips to offer, especially for those who do spend a lot.
First, take the time to test the waters with the content your business creates. Make sure it’s something you can actually sell.
Second, research what your competitors are doing to see how they’re doing content marketing — for instance, have they been using Facebook Live?
Third, your goal must be clear to the point you can agree on (for instance, what is your company’s vision?), so it’s easy to share it with your customers, so they can make decisions.
For advice on how to determine if it’s the right thing to do, here are some recommendations.
