Freelancing Personality: Made a BIG Career Change

The arrival of a new cell phone makes my pre-war Nikon seem very fashionable, whereas the arrival of a new smartphone makes my Nikon seem outdated. But some things just work, and this has been true for a lot of careaders, from different time periods. Often career changes are triggered by the arrival of a new job, and it’s great when people have so many changes of experience that their careaders feel young and fresh. So I asked a freelance copywriter for her thoughts on how to make a career change from an outmoded to a modern field that’s new to them. Oh, I’ve been doing the same thing for so long. I don’t know what makes me different! I can’t tell you. We can always connect! Freelancers Shift From Writing to Digital Marketing/Sales. A freelance copywriter with about a decade’s worth of experience in writing, Olivia Smith tells us that this is a common shift, and the future is bright for us. At the beginning of her career she moved from copywriting to copywriting, design, digital marketing, sales. It felt like a great career, but then the economy changed, and websites like HubSpot and self-publishing were a hot market for freelance copywriters who could help potential clients publish books. Olivia has also contributed to publications like Entrepreneur, Content Engine, Poynter, Mashable, and Levo League. Olivia Smith, Freelance Copywriter / Contributor to Entrepreneur
Why did you decide to change careaders from writing to digital marketing/sales? I went through a fast-paced transition, like so many freelancers do. When I was 18 I wrote my first book and, as an out-of-towner living in the Midwest, had the huge fear of missing out. That just never crosses my mind anymore, so I did it anyway. And I think that means I’m wiser. I’ve spent my life in a fast-paced, fast-paced industry. I have experience on top of a library of writing skills. And digital marketing/sales is both a brilliant science of digital communications and a cutting-edge field where I will continue to grow as a creative copywriter. Is there anything worth thinking about now that you can do or say you don’t know yet? With creative content increasingly showing up as one of the most important marketing ways to stand out online, now seems like the best time for creative copywriters to learn more and take a look at social media copywriting and website copywriting for business for brands. And publishers like Levo League and Entrepreneur were hugely helpful in making those connections with me and expanding my skillset. Olivia Smith, Freelance Copywriter / Contributor to Entrepreneur
In the next 50 years I think digital marketing/sales will be a new career category. Part of the reason this field has so many jobs is because the jobs you created now may be redundant in the next 50 years. Also, I see a lot of demand in promoting anything with social media to readers in the startup world, where I see a lot of the jobs of the future. Read more about Olivia’s career in her personal blog. Pro tip Olivia: be aware of how there is community around you so you can tap into it for career advice or other purposes. I read a lot of books, participated in online communities for freelancers and publishers, and attended coding bootcamps for entrepreneurship and design. What skill will you need to get up to speed with the new tech industry? In order to stay productive I had to learn three new skills very quickly: HTML/CSS, Ruby on Rails, and a few how-to resources. There is a huge wealth of information and connections out there and it can be daunting to start working on something new. When I began learning HTML/CSS I had a fear of coding, so for the first three months I had all the code on my laptop on my desktop with a dongle to connect to my printer. But I eventually learned how to code, and now we can do HTML/CSS web design and even full mobile applications. I know HTML/CSS because every article that I worked on I used the same template as the one before, and I had to go back and do it again and again. Fortunately, our marketing team has great copywriters who can keep up with my changes quickly! But what other skills or knowledge do you need? I couldn’t be happier with my experience editing HTML/CSS code. Also, Ruby on Rails has become so popular over the past few years, and I can really feel the momentum swing around us. Which positions do you think come best into the tech work force and tech fields in general? The technology field can be a very creative environment where each person who is doing the programming or web design will feel inspired by the others’ work. It’s a lot like journalism, where you can get high ratings as long as you do your job very well. For some people, web design and programming is just a matter of experience. Let’s look at how to make a dramatic career shift, according to a freelancer who made $3 million in content marketing. Many people think that content marketing is very different than marketing and that even an account director won’t know what type of content they need to generate. Content marketers have to make sure that they know what is important to them. Most people who go into content marketing have some sort of interest in writing or creative projects, but it’s also highly beneficial to know what work they have enjoyed in the past. If you’re a marketer and you get into content marketing, you have to find what will make you happy. What is the first practical step you take when you get into content marketing? I think it’s important to make content your thing. You have to be passionate about it, and the main way you’ll get to do that is to get into the field and learn what you are good at. Another good way to find what you’re good at is to research as much as you can about the industry. Since I’m in a field I like, the best way to find out what your expertise in a certain field is is to find out which words in the field that you have experience writing, or the terms that you know to be accurate. From a marketing perspective, you’re probably most known for your blog, so start your own. And the best part of writing a blog is that it gives you a free space and your own space, just like when you write for a publisher, where you can explore anything that excites you in any platform. Most importantly, creating a blog is just fun and exciting, so you’ll probably be getting results without worrying about SEO. What does your work schedule look like? I am very lucky to have a great colleague, and that he’s able to get a lot done in a short amount of time. One day, he’ll write a piece, and the next day, he’ll do this sort of project. He also has really fantastic employees who will work with him on certain projects in a shift format, where everyone is working on a project at the same time. But there is another way to get to this level. You’ll have to have a flexible work schedule. It can take four to eight hours or it could take a total of 24 hours. I do the majority of my work in the morning, after my son is up, because I like to get a good sleep and work in a favorable time zone.
How would you describe content marketing? Content marketing is a tricky term. We need to really be able to define how it works. Content marketing is a great example of a field where we have different expectations about what the term means. That’s what makes it interesting for me. I can speak about any number of industry-specific topics that a lot of people don’t even know about. If I sat down with someone and asked them if content marketing is something that you should do, they would probably say no, because they don’t understand what it means. In a creative field, we don’t have all the tools that we need to work with. For a lot of people, it can also take a while to start a new project. Some people just feel like it takes 10 to 15 months to get into the industry
