Freelancing Search Marketing Consultant

For a while, she thought a career change was the only way for her to go after a series of jobs that didn’t work out as well as she had hoped. “I was feeling really frustrated and stuck,” she said. “Then someone told me to find what I love. I thought, I’m going to try my best to do that and I’m going to focus on this new field. ”
And she got her game face on. “I realized I wanted to be a writer,” she said. “It’s kind of a grand way to get your foot in the door and help yourself. ” But there was a caveat. She had only half a year of experience in digital content marketing, so she needed some help figuring out what she wanted to be doing. “And [the technical side] is where you meet a lot of your potential clients,” she said. Two things were essential to her success. She needed to learn something relevant and to test out her work. She needed to sharpen her skills to perform the work she was seeing from other freelancers and users. Above all, she’d have to make sure that she could trust her skills. She knew what she had to do. “Nowadays it’s very hard to make a career change, so most of us are just trying to do our best and work hard to figure it out,” she said. “I say, be brave. I’m going to try something. ”
So she became a writer — but decided to focus first on search engine optimization (SEO) and then production in HTML/CSS. She has since gone from six stories a month to five stories a week and four byline drafts a day. “There’s no real definition of SEO in my mind,” she said.It’s “finding out what’s going to get you to position in the search results, and then marketing. ”
She said the first step was to learn “what the deep skills and knowledge were. ” There are a couple starting-levels SEO skills she went through: SEO best practices, best practices, and how to know if you’re on the right page and the right landing page. Later, she learned best practices for backlinking (a.k.a. linking to other sites) and making sure you give it the right narrative. Finally, she learned how to meet with the right clients. The area of information she found most helpful was writing them a paragraph about their current experience and hoping they would like to hear more about a subject they like. Then she needed to hone her skills. “There are a lot of different ways to learn [specific skills],” she said. “You can read a lot, go to more technical conferences, or study how to run a coding workshop. It helps to have different tools for reference. But to still discover the skills you have, there’s a lot of listening and people thinking. ”
With a bit of studying and a little luck, she said she felt like she had begun to develop her own system for converting ideas into consistent high-quality work. “It really can feel like you’re writing it, writing it, writing it, but not until you’re right in the middle of it that you feel the work,” she said. “That feeling of, ‘This feels right,’ I feel like that’s really important.”
After coming off in relatively well, she learned that it was a good time to try a different route. She didn’t want to leave Google at all because she knew it was where the search company would be on the internet for the foreseeable future, and doing anything other than that might make her get left behind and eventually lose some traffic to her old company. Still, she said, she wanted to break into the sector and the SEO world was a good time to try it. She packed her bags and learned to code in order to get back into the search industry. “I was terrified, but I do think this industry should be a ‘complete pull off,’” she said. “I think this is a really important slice of the pie in the overall industry, and I feel that I can do that. ”
After spending a lot of time applying and working to improve her skills, she earned enough to go freelance. She then worked out a contract for one company and then another, once reporting to a team of people, and then independently for another one. She also made a go of it as a consultant for another company and is now writing full-time. She said she doesn’t worry about her bills but is happy working “a little full-time to meet my growing professional goals, because it takes so much time.” Even though working full-time is a good change for her, it’s not always a traditional career move. Getting around job hunting is another way to get the job you want in this tight labor market. Consider looking at other startups, or looking at freelancing as a job. Because of the fees you’ll need to put into a “free” freelancing consulting package (e.g. marketing, coordination), you can break into this world without paying any money upfront. That is, if you’ve been doing freelance consulting and have good results.
At the end of the day, she said, she loves doing freelancing because she gets to go to work every day, spend time with her baby, work from home, have a lifestyle that she had considered having herself (until earlier), and be able to commute in one of her favorite suburbs. She’s even had some pretty exhilarating experiences with people she considers friends and mentors. “All my old colleagues really trusted me,” she said. “I feel like that’s important when you’re in this industry.”
