Let’s just get this out of the way: Fortnite’s Battle Royale event is ending soon.

Fortnite is on a break for the holidays, but we’re about to see a little bit of everything this week: long holiday gifts, new weapon skins, and more updates for everyone. The new season will be here before you know it, and we’re hoping that Fortnite developers took time to consider changes they might make that will significantly enhance the overall experience.

This week’s update (version 1.3) was very notable as it was the first to have new cosmetics (vanguards), a couple of new tiers, and a new focus for loot. Notably, the focus was on figuring out who gets what loot, and to get more people involved in the loot party. The focus was on loot “sorting,” and a particularly effective photo timer was added. In the midst of these two new updates, v8.20 ended up bringing back the cosmetic-only update, stacking tier unlocks, adding Birthday Treats to Battle Pass crates, and working some more puzzle cues into the Battle Royale experience.

That’s all good stuff, but there’s still a lot of things you could definitely change to make the Battle Royale experience that much better. One change, for example, would make it so it’s a better experience when you need to get gear. On this basis, the game is still picking loot from a randomized list, so that ends up being more random to gamers than it probably should be. But that aspect of loot drops also means that you only get a limited number of drops per match—which sucks because getting gear is important in this game. However, if you make it so that you always see loot when you play, it’s probably good. I think the raid should be revisited to do something like this to give you consistent drops.

I’m not sure if I love the weekly weekly event-based weekly event anymore—which has started to feel like a lot of instances of stuff that should be part of a larger cycle. But I do love the daily event-based weekly event-based super event, and that features a big daily event (and weeks of small daily events) and something for both Slayers and Princesses every single week.

Also, you guys have done the exact opposite of everything I had predicted with the exact same idea. They have taken the and renewed weekly weekly event-based weekly event, and made the weekly content with it. It’s essentially an event without the event (haha). Which I’m fine with because you guys do it differently, and it feels right. I’m not sure that using the weekly updates for stage performances is something people are currently demanding, though. I think I’d rather the game used more innovative models like the pop-up shrines they had for last season.

Personally, I like the fact that there is still a focus on skills, and players are rewarded for their daily hard and daily hard playstyles (as opposed to the “x% we count number of kills and sets and having a strong skills system” vs “x% we count” way of thinking). People have predicted a return to skill points, and not changing this feels like it’s getting too far away from the core gameplay of Fortnite. Also, it seems like a false logic if you count skills combined with hits because some players “wanted to own 100,000 kills for the season.” I don’t know about you, but I’m not so far away from hitting that (it’s right there in the numbers), so skill points don’t seem to be very useful. It’s also a faulty message if you just continue to use the same points score targets as far as free missions are concerned.
