Every week, Forbes posits which 2019 game will be the largest hit. Today’s and announcement to release Fortnite for cross-play with Xbox and Switch came as no surprise, but one player is trying to kill the whole thing.

As first reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, “Justin Meek” wrote a few blog posts about Fortnite cross-play. In one post, he spoke as a gamer:

“The result of cross-play is an event? That’s how these dev teams think? Hell no. This is literally a tech wrinkle to fix a game that shipped before the split era of console and that isn’t being used to promote cross-play like all these cross-play partners are trying to make it out to be?.. What the f**k is wrong with these two? Nintendo should start doing an outreach program for Fortnite to get more players into Mario, Metroid, and more console titles instead of exploiting the platform their gaming platform is the end all be all. Their marketing platform is the most underrated platform of our era…At the same time, Fortnite is also a platform that generates massive amounts of other things besides just the PC market. So you know, Nintendo, you got your priorities mixed up there for sure.”

Another “me” wrote another:

“I think we are seeing [another technical] wiggle room. For now…100 million people have already bought into the franchise and it was possible to develop one game that would actually run on the two platforms. The rest would use a client that would instead all run on one. But I personally think this was of necessity because of how popular the franchise is, and the vast few that support it. As the things I think we are going to see occur, if these devs were seriously going for cross-play on this scale, they would need some sort of pseudo cross-platform client to be a viable option…so it’s clear that the main goal behind cross-play is for players to have more choice over what they do.”

And finally:

“However, we think cross-play is a great idea. Personally, I think the cross-platform game management system will slow things down a bit, but what the devs at Epic are doing here is building a skill-based economy that will supercharge Fortnite. In a way, it works like they were working on the MMO element for years and now are finally working on the core aspects of the game.”

Can you imagine how cool if you can trade out your Hero power for upgrades? And not just stock characters…both on the PCs and also on the Nintendo Switch! Now if only Fortnite would have a legit post-game mode, like an RPG where you can choose how you choose to play (like Pokemon GO!) then I’d totally find myself on the Switch all the time. Or am I being too much of a utopian idealist?

What do you think? Should Nintendo support cross-play for Fortnite? Are you excited to play the Nintendo Switch version? Do you think developers make cross-play a priority? Let us know below.
