UPDATE: The suspect in a deadly shooting at a Mississauga Dollarama has appeared in court via video link from the Toronto North Detention Centre.

Naikead Iqbal appeared via a monitor this morning from prison, covered with a blanket and towing a green, see-through case.

The 24-year-old of Brampton is charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault, after two people were gunned down at a drug deal in Mississauga on Tuesday.

His lawyer Jeremy Goldberg told Justice Phillip Sassano his client isn’t a flight risk and his bail conditions are tough but necessary.

He said Iqbal has a deep interest in Islam, is actively studying and seeking the proper employment that could facilitate his return to the community.

Prosecutor Sean Fyers said the Crown’s case will hinge on the extent of contact Iqbal had with either of the deceased — and described it as a violent situation.

He said Iqbal was interviewed at the hospital and then briefly interviewed from prison by police.

“It is only by (separating) those lives and that incident that we can have a reasonable explanation of why (it happened),” Fyers said.

“He denied any involvement.”

Goldberg said his client believes the deaths were an act of vigilantism and that his client was mistaken for one of the suspects.

Speaking outside the courtroom following the hearing, Kingston local Imran Cheema said his son, identified by police as Yishma Cheema, 28, was one of the men fatally shot by another drug deal gone bad.

“I have to let the family know that justice is done,” he said.

“My life is destroyed.”

Police said Iqbal was a witness and not a suspect, but was immediately arrested and charged upon his release from hospital.

Quebec artist Takanori Gomi, 24, is also charged with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the incident.
