The Overwatch League has announced the hiring of former Overwatch World Cup Champion Eric Becker as the official Overwatch coach.

Becker most recently coached the Overwatch League Developmental Team II. After the elimination of Overwatch Challenger League teams in a house league, the team was re-established as a special development program for players who “don’t come from the same place as their higher-tier teammates,” according to The Guardian.

Becker has been coaching the Overwatch League Challenge winning UK Overwatch squad since July. His latest championship came in November, a championship hailed by many as a symbol of the growth of the Battle Royale style. A long-time competitive Overwatch player and coach, Becker was also mentored by John Jackson, who coaches the Overwatch league’s main team.

“We are very excited to have Eric join our Overwatch League squad,” Overwatch League Commissioner Nate Nanzer said in a press release. “His experience as a coach and player in the Overwatch pro world, along with his love of the game make him an ideal candidate to help our players reach their full potential.”

“It’s an exciting moment for me to join such a wonderful Overwatch League team,” Becker said. “I have a passion for coaching and watching the growth of our players’ game, and this has been the pinnacle of my career to date. I can’t wait to get to work.”
