Some of the best gamers in the world are actually using the name “Team Rainbow” to refer to themselves. The name, which was a reference to the popular team in Activision’s recently released Overwatch League, was a group effort by a large group of American students. All the members are high school students. And to celebrate, one school decided to open up its classrooms so all students could meet, collaborate, and compete.

According to a report from Kotaku, one small Pennsylvania school is very interested in one day being the center of the global gaming community.

“We’re here to bring the games to the people,” said Team Rainbow founder Dane Peck, in an interview. “We believe that eSport and esports is going to be the next NFL of the 21st century. There are 8.5 million people playing it on a per capita basis, now there’s 25 million people watching.”

The school, Mount St. Joe, is located in the middle of all those students, and it decided to get their education on track by creating a team that would compete against the best college and professional competitors.

Students would be getting together to create the Blizzard video game for their team called Freak. It would serve as a foundation for them to create new eSport events based off Blizzard games. The team is made up of high school students from seven different different Pennsylvania high schools.

Unlike most high school teams, Team Rainbow brings in more professional players at a higher level who have a better understanding of the video game and are more passionate about the game itself.

It’s impossible to tell how Freak will perform for two reasons: first, they’re not a bunch of juniors getting into competitive video gaming. Second, there’s no guarantee Freak is going to succeed. Although they did initially compete at the Freaks Conference Cup in Knoxville, Tennessee, they were knocked out of the tournament by EVO Pro Team, who they defeated in their conference matchup.

If Freaks can battle the top teams in the world and compete against them for the most part without breaking a sweat, it would be another huge success for the game and students. And of course, should Freaks begin to take off, companies would do what they can to bring it to other countries.

At the moment, Freaks are only a high school team but Peck is well aware he could see a full-fledged collegiate team emerge soon. For now, though, all he wants to see is students being able to compete and learn from their own gaming community. He even plans to host an esports event for high school students next year so that they can have a few months to get used to it.

“ESports is very new, so it is difficult to even estimate the number of students who might have played the game,” he said. “It is inevitable that it will continue to grow and change. The issue at hand at Mount St. Joe is that we were all raised together, friends and played sports together. Nothing said it would be a good idea to play video games. We all grew up together in the same classroom. I got into games by chance, from an iPad and some great science fiction anime. Some of my buddies have grown up with video games too and some have been playing it for 20 years.”
