Amherst Area Public Schools has some big aspirations when it comes to esports and they hope to fill that hole with an official team that will give the national teams a name that reflects the values of what the school stands for. The idea is to put the Amherst region on the map and bring national attention to the growing esports community which could lead to additional growth for the future of the industry.

Some of the schools are planning to sign a national contract with a gaming school and some of those schools will create their own teams and they will all play against each other in the league. A district plan is going through, which would see a team of players compete under the Amherst school banner.

Amherst Schools already put several of their students in traditional sports, but esports will be a new experience for them. Amherst is the only school of its size in the area to put esports programs on the table and they are already the only school in the state to have an active esports league with participation on both a state and national level.

Amherst’s board of education voted to proceed with this initiative on August 7 and both schools are looking to begin by the end of the current school year with athletic director Dr. Jeremy Eichhorn looking for others schools to join up. But the board hopes that the first group of students who enroll in the esports team will be the original members of the district. They also hope to be bringing in some elements such as grades not necessarily being a factor and even conversations about the lessons of the game should they look to hire esports coaches.

The district doesn’t want to miss out on the recreational benefits that esports can provide as well. This will be a relatively new experience for many students as Amherst plans to sign up a different class to complement their current set of sports. The students will have their offseason requirement of being able to work out in the summer off the table and they can devote more time to making the squad as exciting as possible. The idea of recruiting students to sign up for this team shows how competitive this could be.

The program isn’t funded yet but this is the right move for the small district in the middle of the state. It seems there is some maturity being shown here and if you look at the number of gamers who are interested in the idea it is a program that is taking the school in the right direction. The plan is to send a high school team to the national championships and be a great ambassador for the district.

If the plan goes according to plan, this could be the second town in the country with a district to support esports alongside the university and the national organizations.
