Overwatch League has launched player contracts for all of its 2018 season and it includes the complete size and scope of the league’s salary cap for next season.

While Overwatch League’s preliminary season includes not just a competitive franchise roster but also five high-level test teams, the 2019 season will include every team in the league. It’s important for people to know the structure of the 2019 offseason. At the moment, there is no salary cap set for the entire league. For players that choose to remain unsigned into the winter, Overwatch League will be able to use its indemnity fund to make up the difference.

The salary cap for the Overwatch League is $3 million for the 2019 season. One look at the list of the top 10 Overwatch League salaries shows that the highest wage in the league is around $700,000.

The salary cap is one of the things that makes Overwatch League so intriguing as a spectacle. The league itself will generate an intense emotional reaction from people whenever new players are added to the roster or those that finish out the season find new contracts. Without a salary cap, there is no way for a player to get blown out of the water as quickly.

While $3 million is a lot of money, a low salary cap will allow a bunch of esports teams to be a real competitor. The early teams in Overwatch League had trouble finding players but will be able to utilize the aforementioned indemnity fund if they sign free agents and/or most any other free agent.

According to the contract, the salary cap for the following season is $3.5 million (up from $3 million in 2018), the total fee for releasing players is $100,000, and the minimum salary for the 2019 Overwatch League season is $125,000.

I would bet that over a third of the teams are a bigger expense than they could ever make due to the salary cap. Most of the salary cap will be recycled back into the game for teams who overspend on people.

And as the two point paycheck shows, a big chunk of that money will go to people who don’t contribute much at all. So it’s great to see that Overwatch League is doing everything possible to try and prop up these players.
