How Healthcare Professionals Can Better Balance Work and Home
Healthcare professionals must take on more of an attitude of work-life balance, and not just in their personal lives. One way healthcare professionals can make up for lost time is to set goals for themselves, and focus on a specific task. The same amount of time spent at the finish line isn’t expected to go to waste in a busy professional day. The same amount of time spent at the finish line isn’t expected to go to waste in a busy professional day. Despite the prevalence of “work hard, play hard” as a performance imperative, it’s increasingly recognized that people will only achieve work goals by limiting distractions, decreasing time spent on administrative tasks, and substituting rich, energizing relationships for the time-consuming burden of carrying out tasks and getting work done. Initially, the focus was the 40-hour workweek, but then it evolved to a life-long focus on goals related to health, family, and personal relationships. As a result, the patients and folks in the medical advisory board are healthier and can make better decisions about their health and their quality of life, having more time for you to devote to these activities, their relationships, and family. And that translates into happier people, better health, and more success in their professional lives. Here are some other “work harder, play harder” strategies healthcare professionals can adopt: Find a new way to close Meetings, happy hours, happy hours of networking, and these other activities that allow you to recharge and get focused on work are all sources of distraction. If you’re having trouble making it through the workday without the distraction of a meeting, happy hour, or networking, it’s time to take a step back and put the activity you’re working on on a “what-to-do list. This starts to help you, and it’s just another great way to boost your productivity and encourage your job-seeking efforts and relationships. Not only will it boost your own productivity by having others do the work they’re taking on for you, but it will get everyone to use that weekend — since the “work talk” should be off limits — to share ideas with each other. When you’re busy creating content and connecting with people in your field, every project you work on means you’re improving your professional and personal relationships. And make time for activities like what I call “building a community.” Your own name and that of your colleague should go along with the community or social network you’re starting. I’m not saying you have to be able to predict your own calendar, but if you have time-consuming project due to release tomorrow, it’s a good idea to prepare yourself for what’s coming, so you’re ready to go when the storm hits.
