I’ve been reading Melanie Do, author of Staying Balanced: 8 Tips to Remind Yourself to Breathe as Well as Remember the Health Benefits, for close to two years. Here are 6 ways to shift your yoga practice in 2020. 1. Scenting the world – a few weeks ago, Do published a short story on how yoga affects us after a harrowing day and what we could do to recognize that anxiety in yoga and maybe imagine a vision of what might be possible for ourselves or someone close to us. Take the time to smell the world, Do says, placing notes on a board for you in front of the mirror to sniff each of these helpful perfumes: 2. Learning to listen in every class – Do says that instead of nagging the teacher to call the breaths, focus on learning from the class: “You could learn to stay quiet if you didn’t persist. Or ask a teacher a question, and practice being a teacher: ‘Wouldn’t it be really awesome if we had taken a few breaths together,’ and then teach the class. Instead of sulking about something that you’ve just learned in class, remind yourself to listen and do it with each person. In turn, the teacher will be more effective in his or her yoga practice, and in their lives. In these spaces, Do says you have the ability to see the world in a new way. If we can reframe that moment into our experience and daily practice, we can reframe our practice in new ways as well.I highly recommend taking a break on these moments just to breathe, Do says. Do says that all of us are in these moments at different times in our lives. If you are having a stressful day, Go says, practice and break away from that by turning on the WiFi and taking a few minutes to reconnect and recharge. You can make choices that help you feel connected to the present moment, or you can take a 10-minute walk to get some alone time in for yourself. 3. Working from home – Do says that working from home can be a huge stress reliever and that a lot of people use home office suites as full-time work spaces. People have different levels of exhaustion or anxiety so it’s perfectly fine for you to feel both of those states at the beginning of pregnancy. 1. Pressing pause – Do says that feeling in the moment is one of the most valuable assets we have to allow ourselves time for the rest and relaxation of the body and mind. Taking a few minutes of quiet time in your day can create the space to pause and reflect on what you’re feeling or have experienced.

“In the yoga world, in a class that’s growing, you have to hit the goals,” says Ted Putnam, a yoga teacher at ElementOfFlow in Houston, who teaches for brands like Bath & Body Works, Lisa Ray, Body By Tara, and Zablocki. “You can’t just hand out guidance for meditation, posture, forward-fold pose, and body language. But let’s just say, in order to keep a practicing yoga teacher excited, you need to keep with the trends. Here are five new stories that the yogis I spoke with told about how yoga can affect our bodies. Yoga has been shown to have these effects with body functions including breathing, digestion, muscle tension, and growth. YMCA works with families to incorporate the practice into their daily lifestyles, and this more holistic way of living has allowed them to develop better eating habits, physical fitness, and a yoga practice,” she says. Working with our bodies is a very primal and intimate practice. Girish Jain, a Yoga teacher at 102 Rockingham Street, NE, explains the and the journey of balance as practiced as a meditative practice: I know with ease where to rest, take a breath, and enjoy whatever has been gained from what feels like a really hard, challenging, even brutal session. And while they’re one of the most difficult of the four movements, I find that they feel like my best practices of mindfulness, as it’s pushing me in from a new place with each repetition. By making this one, I’m using each one as a small sense of engagement that triggers me and makes me feel engaged with the practice in some way. But at the same time, it’s really hard because I feel like that moment, no matter how I choose to move through it, is so full of gratitude that I can’t keep doing it.

Living a lifestyle that focuses on the body in all of its forms makes sense and many of the simplest ways of practicing are often the most meaningful. It can be therapeutic to know that yoga and meditation are regular for you and incorporating a couple of a dozen or so of your “healthists” into your overall wellness will help you feel more loving. First, people should encourage their body to practice sometimes. Getting inspired, and having someone to support you, can allow you to create a cycle that helps to balance this hectic or stressful day. The practice of meditation can help balance your mind and your body. In turn, meditation can help to enhance our learning and mind with the practice of yoga. This will help us in this hectic and stressful time of the day. Also, plan at least five days out for your yoga practice. Step it up into the next class with and keep in mind that you will keep learning throughout your yoga practice. As a stay-at-home mom of three and a yoga enthusiast, I’ve noticed that “hard work” is the most overused term in my life. To stop the barrage of “hard work” quotes that permeate my day, here are five strategies I use in my daily routine: We don’t simply send the kids off to school on the first day of classes and hang up our office doors for the next few weeks. Why not write a gratitude journal and start with the most important thing in your life? Next to it, write down the most important task of the day. That’s the trouble with practicing yoga, because you work it every day. Besides, two-a-day also means it’s easier to stay on task while yoga, or on TV or computer. But doing the one-a-day kind of yoga practice at all times will keep you grounded and give you something to do. Whether you’re a regular yogi or someone who’s never tried yoga, practicing meditation for fifteen minutes can help you feel kinder and calmer. A year ago, I started to meditate almost every day. I don’t care what my kids do, I’m not going to cut them off from quality time with me because I love them. I don’t call it “work” time because it’s just a day where I have all the things I want to get done in my schedule and now have a mini vacation in between. Between sleeping, going to bed and doing work I’m done for the day. I know that I will have to be back early Wednesday and that’s a feeling that I don’t like. Some days I feel like I can actually do more. When you rest and digest your day, you have time to reach your full potential of your life. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely enjoy spending time with my family and doing my kids’ homework and my work. I’m a dad of boys, so it’s all about unplugging and relaxing, but mostly enjoying my time with my family. There are times when people will say that you shouldn’t allow yourself to go to a spa or have a night or a day of reflection as a present. I can relate, because sometimes I feel like I’m wasted and definitely wasteful with my time. Even though they may worry that it’s stealing away time, a spa day for me is about self-care. A lot of people think that getting into an all-day bliss and going for a brunch really means it’s over-worked and stressed people. You need time to take care of your self and that doesn’t mean depriving yourself of things that are the most important, for you.

Here are some simple, time-saving strategies that I use to try to create a life of balance and flow with our yoga practices: This idea of “class-less” and practicing meditating during yoga classes is something that we’ve been trying at home and I’ve found it works really well. Then, when I go into a class, I’ll talk to myself through the breathing and choose the one I feel is the best for me at the time. I love these changes in my practice that I’ve been able to implement, and I hope you’ll try them out and see a change in your life. You won’t get as good a mind-body connection during a regular class or with just anywhere, anywhere meditation. I sometimes get really stressed in a class, and meditation with my masters often provides me with the freedom I need to calm down and start thinking in a new direction. As difficult as it can be, it’s also great to work with yourself to create a bit of down time and to regroup and learn to stop worrying and start taking a breath in and really loving what’s on your mind. But try to take some time during your day to find where you are right now and then focus on each of those activities that you’re feeling strongest and might inspire you to really get started on your meditation.
