The Four Super Effective Ways to Increase the Number of People Who Unsubscribe from Your Mailing List

The Four Super Effective Ways to Increase the Number of People Who Unsubscribe from Your Mailing List

Nobody likes Unsubscribing.

For many, it starts with a simple form error or unintelligible mail that prompts the customer to avoid a company for good. Others choose to forgo unsolicited communications, based on the frequency of unsolicited emails. And still others unsubscribe from lists for a variety of different reasons.

But there are a few effective ways to increase the number of people who choose to unsubscribe from your mailing list. And there are a few even more effective methods that could just help you to actually reduce overall email opt-outs.

Deliver to All Those Who Participate

Subscribing to a mailing list is really dependent on the kind of list your company offers. If your list is an opt-in list, that is, you only use people who actively sign up for the mailing list, then it will be easier to maintain all those subscribers. So, to make sure that you are not overtargeting them or overtreaching, you may need to offer free account registration to everyone that signs up for your mailing list. This, of course, opens up more traffic for your email marketing efforts.

If your list is an opt-out list, you can be much more aggressive about trying to reach every single subscriber. Try sending or mentioning a campaign, offer, website, or event during that unsubscribe period and see how much of an impact it has.

Research your Customer Base

There are a number of different ways you can do this. You can employ “swipe” email marketing that allows you to display a “click here” button on your website to the recipient, letting them to click on it to automatically sign up for your mailing list. Or you can send out a newsletter.

By designing your email campaign using a method that you feel is effective, you will be able to offer prospects a way to try it out without unsubscribing.

Leverage Social Media

Any one of these methods, however, will have limited effectiveness without the right data. It’s also important to understand where potential customers are likely to unsubscribe and figure out how you can convince them not to do so in the first place.

Social media platforms, for example, are not set up to allow business to send out emails. Sure, you can set up an email account and send out newsletters. But you can’t count on that being enough. People have become so accustomed to seeing relevant and timely content that if there is no compelling reason for them to keep receiving emails, they will find ways to give you a run for your money.

In order to counteract this, your business needs to have access to your customers’ social media profiles. You can find your Facebook page on Facebook’s “Business Pages.” You can also access Twitter’s “Business Pages” or any other social media platform that currently has their “Business Pages” listed.

You can find your Twitter page on Twitter’s homepage. Or you can search for it by searching for your company name on Twitter or using the website’s social bookmarking tool. Or you can search for a specific hashtag or keyword and then tweet things like: “Interested to share any info? Let me know.”

Once you have access to your customers’ social media profiles, you can invite them to join your mailing list. This way, you will be able to stay in touch with them via a web form or email without needing to go through them again and again and again to secure their list.
